Out of shadow,
into the light.

Our vision

From The Shadows Festival was founded by the Steinaa Trio with a simple ambition: to bring female composers out of the shadows and into the light.

The Festival

The festival presents music exclusively by female composers and demonstrates that their works possess an artistic depth, strength, and quality that stand entirely on their own.

Through a carefully curated concert programme, the festival moves from historical composers to some of today's most distinctive voices, as well as new works that help shape the future repertoire. The result is a festival that balances the intimate and the powerful, the familiar and the yet undiscovered.

Each concert is conceived as a complete artistic experience where music and storytelling meet. Audiences gain insight into the stories behind the works, creating a stronger connection — whether they are new to classical music or experienced listeners.

With a focus on accessibility and an inclusive atmosphere, the festival welcomes a broad audience — from dedicated classical music lovers to curious first-time listeners and families.

From The Shadows Festival is not only about rediscovering overlooked composers. It is about expanding the repertoire, changing what we hear on stage, and contributing to a more diverse and inclusive musical landscape.

About the trio

The Steinaa Trio are the founders of From The Shadows Festival and have established themselves as one of the most exciting young ensembles on the Danish classical music scene. In 2023, the trio was awarded Second Prize at DR P2's National Chamber Music Competition.

The trio consists of flutist Maria Steinaa, oboist Eva Steinaa, and pianist Elias Holm. Eva and Maria are twin sisters and have performed together since childhood — a rare intuitive unity where phrasing, breath, and musical impulses merge naturally. Together with Elias Holm, they create a vibrant and dynamic musical dialogue characterised by presence, sonic curiosity, and a strong sense of character.

The trio performs throughout Denmark and works with a broad repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary works. In recent years, they have developed a particular focus on music by female composers.
